SALT TREATMENT
Salt is used very frequently by koi keepers. A small amount of it in a pond has been proven to keep koi very healthy. It allows their blood circulation and respiration to flow much easier. Salt keeps bacteria and fungus down to a minimum. It is also a slightly effective way to control your algae problems. The type of salt you use is not table salt. Table salt contains iodine which is harmful to koi. You must purchase salt that contains no iodine. This is commonly known as aquarium salt at pet stores. Be sure you purchase the correct kind. Any other kind of salt has additives and may harm or kill your koi.
The regular dosage for a pond is 1 tablespoon of salt per 10-15 gallons of water. Salt does not have to be added to the pond all of the time. It stays in the water for long periods of time. The only time you would need to add it again would be when you change your pond water.
Bacterial problems with your pond require larger doses of salt. The amount that seems to be most effective is 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water. Neither of these dosages should hurt your plants or other life in the pond. Bio-filters may be slightly effected, but they will adapt with time.
